This website is an archive of an exhibition prepared by students in the course MUSE 360 Visitor Engagement and Museum Technologies taught in the Spring 2022 at Rochester Institute of Technology. Brooklyn-based designer, entrepreneur, and creative director, Joe Doucet and co-founders Dean di Simone and Evan Clabots, established OTHR as a technology-and-design initiative framed around the creation of a handful of established and emerging designers who were called upon to envision useful, aesthetic, and unique objects that would be created through cutting-edge, digital manufacturing means for the purpose of transforming design, manufacturing, and consumption. Doucet invited them to create household objects that would be printed on-demand using digital fabrication processes—including 3-D printed ceramic, porcelain, and bronze—all the while bearing witness to the hallmark of limited-edition processes. Though manufactured by machine, each piece was produced upon purchase and was numbered, thereby designating their uniqueness as well as their minimal environmental impact.

OTHR reminds us of the liminal space between analog and digital and between design and its manufacture. Each object is useful, aesthetic, and beautifully designed and resides in two spaces: the analog world around us—a 3-D printed version of a stunning design—and in the digital space, as a file ready to be printed, in any medium, on-demand. The materials on view here and the corpus of 3-D printed products, as well as the digital files, comprise the OTHR collection in the Vignelli Center for Design Studies. The OTHR collection is available to visitors and researchers by appointment.
